Dispatch from Sundance
"Eno" world premieres to sold-out audiences and conversations about the future of technology and film.
Hi everyone! My new documentary about Brian Eno had its World Premiere this past weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, and the response has been incredible. Audiences have been inspired by Brian's ideas about creativity, art, and life. And the film community has been buzzing about the potential of the generative software we've created that powers the film. I'm still wrapping my brain around everything that's happened in the past few days.
"Eno" represents a new idea about how films can be made and watched. The film is assembled dynamically by a generative software platform I developed with Brendan Dawes drawing from new interviews and footage we shot with Brian and hundreds of hours of unreleased material from his archive. The result is a film that's never the same twice. Every time "Eno" is shown, it's a different movie with different scenes, different music, etc. So the six generations of the film we're showing here at Sundance will never be seen again anywhere. The conversations I've been having with other filmmakers here about the possibilities of this new technology are actually the most exciting part of this experience so far. I can't wait to keep exploring this stuff!
There’s been tons of press about the film and its potential ramifications on the future of cinema. Read about it in Variety, The Wrap, LA Times, Rolling Stone, Forbes, Screen International, Indiewire and many more.
I am so grateful for my team on this film, all our executive producers and backers, and everyone who helped make this project possible. That includes you! Thanks for your support of my past projects, it’s what has enabled me to keep going as a filmmaker.
We'll be announcing more news soon, along with screening events worldwide in March, April and May. Stay tuned...
Direct from the Festival: “Eno” Sundance Premiere Poster and Badges
To celebrate the Sundance premiere of Eno, we’ve released a new poster for the film designed by Build and inspired by the generative system we’ve created for the film. It’s the full theatrical one-sheet size (27”x40”) and printed on ultra white #80 McCoy Silk stock. Posters are sold unframed and are $50 each.
The first 50 poster orders will receive a free “Eno” badge direct from Sundance! We’ve been giving these out at the premiere screenings, order a poster and we’ll send you one (it’ll be a random white, black or pink).
Cheers!

I trust Sundance was a good scenius.
I’m interested in what happens when narrative control is exchanged for a more ambient environmental experience. Chance is the potential to suggest bridges and links that require the viewer’s (or listener’s) active engagement — more as a co-creator than as a passive receiver.
I am reminded of Ludology and the study of events and actions that take place during play (as in a video game), in contrast to narrative and the study of how stories are made and work (with a predetermined beginning, middle, and ending). Or those non-linear ‘which way’ books.
There are many ways to create the conditions for an experience.
Great to hear it went well!
